Cutting a section out of a bodyshell for replacement, removing cut sections from scrapped vehicles for use on your resto or for cutting steel to the shape you want the easy way, a Plasma cutter is almost unsurpassable for speed and neatness. We're all familiar with the 3 states of matter : Solid, Liquid and Gas? Plasma is known as the '4th State' and consists of a gas passing through a nozzle at high pressure and being ignited by a high voltage arc. In this case the gas is air, supplied from your normal bodyshop compressor. The plasma jet will scythe through even thick steel 'like a hot knife through warm butter'. You do not need specialisedhalmet or goggles, just dark shades to protect your eyes from the arc.
We've tried the cheap machines - we had one that after a few minutes use started emitting a rather large flame from the bodywork(!) so we found one we trust as its a very safe process if the equipment is upto the job. Needs a compressor that can deliver about 4.5 to 5.0 Bar which is within the reach of any good home workshop unit and uses much less on car body steel.
